Abnormal vaginal discharge is an unpleasant condition that occurs in women. It results because of different factors and denotes the presence of an infection in the body.
Here below are listed some signs that may indicate an abnormal vaginal discharge and infection in women:

- changes in consistency, color, amount, odor of the discharge;
- burning sensations during urination;
- bleeding between periods;
- cottage cheese-like vaginal discharge;
- constant and abundant vaginal discharge;
- a pungent odor accompanied by greenish, yellowish, white vaginal discharge.

Such unappealing changes in vaginal discharge affect a woman's sexuality, libido, intercourse and partner's sexual desire. The symptoms of the abundant vaginal discharge are easy to detect as they come with foul odor, discomfort during coitus, mess and fear. Moreover, even if the signs are not so visible, each woman must be capable to perceive the most “innocent” changes that happen in her body. Once a woman has noticed an unusual discharge she should visit her ob-gyn for screening and treating the infection in its earlier stage. Otherwise, the untreated condition can lead to more severe problems such as Pelvic Inflammatory Disease (PID), infertility, difficulties during pregnancy, labor or delivery, etc.

This is the reason why women should keep their attention on the prevention of any infection and vaginal discharge. Those women who are interested in reducing their risk of catching a vaginal infection can prevent it by practicing the following tips:

- Say welcome to cotton panties!
Cotton is meant to allow one's genital area to breath and stay always dry.
NB. Use panties only during the day! Abstain from wearing them at night when you are sleeping.

- Ignore vaginal douches as they disrupt a woman's vaginal chemical balance.

- Forget about petroleum jelly or oils for vaginal lubrication as they create a breeding ground for bacteria to grow. Opt for water based lubricants!

- If you are being treated for a vaginal infection, do not engage in any sex session until you have no more symptoms. Make sure you use the prescribed medications correctly and consistently.

- Do not use hygiene products that can irritate the delicate tissues of the vagina. Abstain from using scented deodorants, perfumes, powders, soaps, lotions and bubble baths!

- Do not always wear tight-fitting clothing (bathing suits, exercise wear, pantyhose, etc).

- Since vaginal infections may come with little or intense itching sensations, abstain from scratching! The infected areas may inflame and women may experience pain.

- If you treat the vaginal infection by yourself and you notice that the symptoms do not disappear or improve, it's a high time to visit your health care provider for a vaginal exam (PAP and urine tests).

- Do not forget about condoms! These latex sheathes must be an inevitable accessory for couples who engage in sex. Briefly saying condoms are designed to prevent undesired pregnancy and contamination with STDs, as well.

- Make sure you always wipe from front to back after urination or a bowel movement. Incorrect wiping can easily spread bacteria to the vagina causing vaginal discharge and infection.

When speaking about women's health and good vaginal condition it is worthy to mention about accurate basic hygiene, regular regimen of sleeping, nutrition and emotional state, of course. For instance, a steady support, affection and understanding between partners can significantly impact on a woman's sex drive, health state and attitude towards her sexual life. This is the reason why men should always love, respect and protect women offering them pleasure, satisfaction and enjoyable sex.
